WE VALUE OUR VOLUNTEERS!
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”
— Margaret Mead
Keeping the doors of a museum open requires a lot of work, and the smiling face that greets you at the front door is just the tip of the iceberg.
There’s plenty of work to do, from researching and cataloging artifacts and souvenirs, to helping out at community events and sharing the story of Corrections for our visitors.
We are proud to be a vital part of the Folsom community, and we know we couldn’t do it without the generous people who volunteer their time and skills to help us in our mission. If you’d like to be part of the fun here at the Folsom Prison Museum, and soon the Big House Prison Museum, check out the following areas in need of volunteers:
Museum Docent– We need docents to work in the existing Folsom Prison Museum. Volunteers will be trained on how to open and close the museum as well as conduct souvenir transactions. Volunteers needn’t have prior employment or prison work experience. Volunteers will be given an overview of prison operations and can obtain a wealth of information from books in the museum. You may work as much or as little as you desire, although we do ask that you work a complete shift, which is six hours.
Research & Archives– If you enjoy doing research, documenting and photographing archives or re-creating exhibits, we have the job for you. The museum has recently acquired the artifact tracking system Past Perfect and we need volunteers who can enter artifacts into the system.
Special Events– If event planning is more to your liking, we have the position for you!
The museum also takes part in the annual Folsom Blues Half Marathon, the Amgen Tour, and other events. Check our website or Facebook page often for more information on how you can help out at an upcoming event.
Operations- There are always tasks that need to be completed at the museum, such as housekeeping, receiving and displaying merchandise, delivering merchandise to our order fulfillment company, etc.
There’s always something to do in or for the museum. Give us a call at (916) 985-2561, ext. 4589, and let’s see if we can find you the perfect volunteer fit.
